The Laney Pro-Tube 30 MV Series II (often referred to as part of the AOR Series) is a highly regarded, British-made 30-watt all-tube amplifier head from 1992. It is famous for delivering a hot-rodded Marshall JCM800 style crunch at a fraction of the cost, making it a cult favorite for classic rock, stoner rock, sludge, and doom metal.
Here is a breakdown of its key specifications and features:
Unlike its larger 50W and 100W siblings which utilize EL34 power tubes, the 30-watt version relies on 6V6 tubes, which give it a unique compression and slightly sweeter power-amp breakup:
  • Power Output: 30 Watts (loud enough to easily keep up with a live drummer).
  • Power Tubes: 2 x 6V6.
  • Preamp Tubes: 3 to 4 x ECC83 / 12AX7.
  • Speaker Outputs: 8 Ohm and 16 Ohm outputs on the rear panel.
The AOR Circuit & Controls
The defining feature of this amp is the Advanced Overdrive Response (AOR) circuit, which cascades an extra gain stage for heavy saturation:
  • Push/Pull Boosts: The Bass, Middle, and Treble EQ knobs feature push/pull functionality. Pulling them out acts as an active frequency boost, providing massive low-end chunk or searing highs.
  • Dual Preamp Volumes: It features two gain controls (Pre-amp and AOR Volume) to balance your rhythm crunch and high-gain lead tones.
  • Connectivity: Equipped with an effects loop and a direct output for recording or patching.
Series I vs. Series II (1992 Era)
By 1992, Laney had refined the amplifier into the Series II specification. The main differences from the mid-1980s Series I models include:
  • Control Layout: Series II models moved away from the early "6-knob" simplicity, adding separate Master Volume controls to make the high-gain tones much more manageable at bedroom levels.
  • Aesthetics: Series II dropped the early metal-grille look for a more traditional cloth front panel, often featuring updated green/grey faceplate accents and the classic stylized Laney font.
