The Epiphone ET Series guitars were created in 1970-1978 at the Matsumoku plant in Japan. Kalamazoo USA production of Epiphones was stopped in favor of manufacturing them overseas in Japan. Epiphone offered a new line of Japanese-made Epiphones that shared similarities with other Japanese copies instead of their previous products.

Often mistaken for the American-made Crestwood, Coronet, Olympic, and Wilshire, the ET-290 was a unique blend of classic Epiphone body styles and designs, all crafted in Japan. Unlike the original USA versions, these Japanese models boasted a bolt-on neck.
